Guru Ravidas was born in the village of Seer Goverdhanpur near Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. Mata Ghurbinia was his mother, and his father was Raghuram. He was born in a family who used to work with the skin of dead animals to produce leather products, which was known to be very untouchables in India. He was very much victimized due to his caste. He had to face many rules and difficulties created by many upper castes, which he also mentioned in his articles. He spent most of his time in spiritual activities at the bank of river Ganga and in the company of ascetics and saints.
Due to his deep love and devotion to God, he was getting away from his family business and parents. Seeing this happen, his parents got him married to Mata Lona Devi. But even after marriage, he was unable to focus properly in his family's business. That's why his father was not happy with him. Rather than being angry with his father's actions, he left the house quietly, stayed in a small hut with his wife, and set up a small roadside shop for mending shoes.
Guru Ravidas said many beautiful things in loving devotion to God, Such as
Hari in everything, everything in Hari
For him who knows Hari and the sense of self
no other testimony is needed
the knower is absorbed
His teachings have the same content as Bhagat Kabir Ji and Guru Nanak Dev Ji. The devotional songs of Guru Ravidas Ji have been included in Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Many other gurus teachings have also been included in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji who kept similar views about God.
It is believed that Guru Ravidas was victimized due to his caste. However, his teachings and devotional songs are all included in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. But when a higher caste tried removing his work, the whole of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji disappeared. It was a miracle of Waheguru.
Every year, Guru Ravidas birthday, known as Guru Ravidas Jayanti, is celebrated in north India with extreme joviality, especially in the Indian state of Punjab. In 2019, Guru Ravidas Jayanti falls on February 19th, which is a Tuesday.
