Hovering is one of the most energy-intensive forms of flight known, and the hummingbird does it constantly. This metabolic inferno means energy stores vanish almost instantly. Unlike humans, who can draw on stored fat for days or even weeks, a hummingbird possesses virtually no metabolic reserve. Nectar—the sugary fuel of its life—must be consumed every 10 to 15 minutes during waking hours. Each feeding is rapidly converted into usable energy, bypassing long-term storage. Nightfall introduces an even greater challenge. When flowers close and feeding stops, the hummingbird risks burning through its remaining fuel before dawn. Its solution is one of the most remarkable physiological adaptations in the animal kingdom: torpor. By lowering its body temperature and slowing its heart rate, the bird temporarily shuts down the metabolic furnace, surviving the night in a state closer to suspended animation than sleep.
