Why This Bird Deliberately Rubs Red Ants Across Its Feathers Instead of Eating Them
A bird is sitting quietly beneath a tree, but what it is doing with the tiny red ants around it looks almost impossible to explain. Instead of eating them, it picks them up, brings them to its feathers, and deliberately rubs them across its body. Why would a bird willingly place biting insects on itself? The answer becomes even more fascinating when the bird is revealed to be the blue jay, a familiar North American bird known for its striking blue plumage, bold personality, and surprisingly unusual behavior.
A blue jay can turn a tiny red ant into something that looks almost like a feather-care product. Instead of crushing it for a meal, the bird may deliberately place an ant among its feathers and rub it across its body. It sounds bizarre, but this strange ritual, known as anting, may have a very practical purpose.
Blue jays are among the birds known to perform anting. During the behavior, a blue jay may pick up ants with its bill, press them against its feathers, and move the insects through areas such as its wings and tail. Sometimes the bird may simply sit among ants and allow them to crawl through its plumage.
The most interesting part is what happens when the ants become disturbed. Many ants release defensive chemicals, and some species produce formic acid. This sharp-smelling substance can irritate small organisms. When the ants are rubbed through the feathers, these chemicals may help discourage or remove unwanted passengers such as mites, lice, and other tiny parasites.
The behavior can look uncomfortable because the blue jay is deliberately handling insects that can bite or sting. Yet the bird appears to have learned how to control the interaction. It may carefully handle the ant without immediately eating it, giving the insect an opportunity to release its defensive chemicals.
Anting is not limited to one exact method. Some birds actively pick up ants and rub them over their feathers, while others may simply sit on an ant colony or disturb ants with their wings. Blue jays can also use different types of insects for similar purposes, suggesting that the behavior is more flexible than it first appears.
There is another fascinating detail: birds sometimes perform anting with substances that do not come from ants at all. Certain insects and plant materials can contain chemicals that may have useful effects on feathers or parasites. This makes the behavior less like a simple odd habit and more like a natural form of self-care.
Feathers are extremely important to birds. They provide insulation, help control body temperature, and allow flight. Keeping them clean and properly arranged is therefore a regular part of a bird's daily routine. Blue jays already spend considerable time preening, using their bills to straighten feathers and maintain their plumage. Anting may add another layer to this grooming process.
Still, scientists do not consider every detail of anting completely settled. Parasite control is one of the leading explanations, but the chemicals involved may have several effects, and birds may also gain sensory benefits from the process. The behavior could even be partly influenced by individual preference and experience.
The truly remarkable part of this behavior is the strange partnership taking place between two creatures that normally have a very different relationship. One is a bird looking after its feathers; the other is a small insect trying to defend itself. Yet for a brief moment, the blue jay turns that defensive chemical weapon into a useful grooming tool.
A handful of red ants beneath a tree may seem insignificant, but to a blue jay, they can become part of an extraordinary natural routine. The bird isn't simply playing with ants—it is using the chemistry of another creature in one of nature's most unusual examples of feather care.
