The making of the aircraft is considered to be one of the greatest inventions in the world, which turned the journey of many hours into a few minutes. But, there is also a big truth related to this, that is, when a plane crash happens, then the risk of death of the person increases many times. There have been many major plane accidents in history, in which all or most of the passengers had to embrace death. There are also some such accidents, which have been very much discussed for some of their strange incidents and have registered a different name in the pages of history.
But why did a rugby player's team have to live by eating the flesh of their own teammates? In today's article, we are going to tell you about one such plane accident, in which survivors kept themselves alive for 72 days by eating dead people flesh. The incident occurred, when the rugby team of Uruguay's Old Christians Club was on their way to play a match in Santiago, Chile, but on the way, they met with a terrible plane crash, and for 72 days they were not found by anyone. So let's try to know what kind of troubles they had to face there during this hard period.
This is actually a matter of 13 October 1972 when Uruguay's rugby team players along with their families, supporters, and friends were going to Chile by Flight 571. The plane had to pass through several snowy hills and there was a total of 45 people on the plane. But shortly after take-off, the weather started deteriorating and the pilot could not see anything due to low visibility, as a result of which the plane crashed on the Andes mountains at an altitude of 11,710 feet. Soon after the crash, 12 out of 45 people died immediately but those who survived had to see a worse time than death, as they had to spend 72 days in -30 degrees Celsius. Not only this, the survivors had to eat the bodies of their own companions to keep themselves alive.
Initially, to save their lives, the survivors divided the remaining food items into small portions so that they could last longer. And to overcome the lack of water, they removed a piece of metal from the plane which could heat up very quickly in the sun, so that they could melt the ice and start collecting water. But the real trouble started when the food ran out and due to no choice, these people started eating the bodies of their companions by cutting them into pieces. They were in the hope that someone would come to save them, but two months passed and nothing happens that way.
In such a situation, two survivors thought that it is better to go for help than to die this way. With the intention of finding help, these two survivor players started trekking on the ice and eventually, descended from the Andes Mountains for ten consecutive days and reached the populated area of Chile, where they told the rescue team the location of their companions. But by the time the team came to rescue them, 15 more people were dead, and 72 days after the crash, only 16 people survived. After this incident, people started calling the survivors as cannibals because they ate the flesh of their own companions.
