There is no doubt that Italy is a beautiful country, but even more beautiful is Lake Garda, which adds to its charm even more. The natural landscapes, mountains, and sparkling lakes in Italy are helping it to look more colorful and fascinating with human settlements nearby. Humans have been inhabited near lake garda since ancient times and from time to time they have witnessed various mysterious activities and creatures in this lake. It is believed that a giant monster still exists here, whose origin is not of today but is centuries old. Sightings of this monster have been reported since the Middle Ages, which has frightened fishermen, locals, and monks of the monastery on Garda Island.
The first reported sighting of this monster occurred on the 17th August of 1965 near Mermaid Bay. A group of about ten tourists claimed to have seen this monster together, according to them, this sea creature was more than 10 meters long and was shaped like a huge snake. It rises from the water for a few seconds and plunges back into the underwater caves, where there is huge darkness. As per the legends, this monster lives inside these caves. This event was reported by many national newspapers, and so the attention of people from across the world was drawn to this lake. This monster was named “Bennie”, in honor of Lake Garda’s ancient name: Benaco.

Over the next decade, these sightings began to occur in large numbers, with 18 reported sightings since the year 2000. People call it a giant creature with a spooky mixed appearance of a snake and a whale, which is about 15 meters in length. In 2001, a diver claimed to have seen Bennie and was utterly horrified. Once again in 2013, a family saw this creature in the area of Mermaid Bay, which is considered the most mysterious part of this lake. The last sightings of this monster were reported in 2017 or 2018 and may be happening even today.
This lake is quite famous for its ghost stories too, as it is believed that the spirit of a washerwoman remains active here, who can be seen washing her clothes near the lake at night and hanging them in the moonlight on wires that cross the valleys. This spirit is considered harmless because so far it has not harmed anyone. But washing clothes at night near the lake can be a scary experience in itself.
Not only this, but the tales of mermaids are also quite famous in this area because it has been heard that for centuries some mermaids have been living here, which are not dangerous, but quite mischievous. According to legends, mermaids have been swimming near Baia delle Sirene for centuries. Now their sightings have diminished, but in earlier times in the summer, they used to wake up the sleeping fishermen and give them a special beverage to drink. After drinking it, they would become invigorated and immediately return home to their wives, thus emptying the lake for mermaids.
