At the bottom of the ocean, where sunlight has completely disappeared, something extraordinary is happening. A strange white crab stands beside a hydrothermal vent, holding its hairy arms toward a stream of hot, chemical-rich water. Its arms look almost like tiny brushes covered with fine threads. But those threads are doing far more than making the animal look unusual—they provide a home for bacteria that may become an important source of food.
This remarkable creature is the yeti crab, a deep-sea animal belonging to the genus Kiwa. It lives around hydrothermal vents, where cracks in the seafloor release mineral-rich fluids containing chemicals that can be toxic to many animals. Temperatures around these vents can change dramatically over very short distances, creating one of the most unusual habitats on Earth.
Unlike many familiar crabs, the yeti crab has highly reduced eyes, and some species are considered effectively blind. This makes sense in a world where sunlight never reaches the seafloor. Rather than depending heavily on vision, the crab relies on other senses to interact with its surroundings. Its unusual body and sensory structures help it function in the permanent darkness surrounding hydrothermal vents.
The most fascinating feature of the yeti crab is found on its claws and walking legs. They are covered with long, hair-like structures called setae. These tiny structures provide a large surface where bacteria can grow. Some of these bacteria are able to use chemicals released around hydrothermal vents as an energy source.

The yeti crab does not plant seeds, build fields, or deliberately cultivate bacteria in the way humans farm crops. Instead, it provides a suitable surface for microbes to live on. By positioning and moving its hairy appendages through chemical-rich water, the crab can encourage the growth of bacterial communities. It can then consume some of these bacteria as food.
In simple terms, the crab carries a microscopic food garden on its own body.
Scientists have found that different yeti crab species can have different relationships with their bacterial partners. In some cases, the bacteria appear to gain access to chemicals they need for growth, while the crab gains a potential food source. This close relationship between an animal and microorganisms is known as symbiosis.
The crab's hairy arms also solve another important problem. Food is scarce in the deep ocean because sunlight cannot reach these depths. Ordinary plants cannot grow there through photosynthesis. Hydrothermal vents, however, provide chemical energy that certain microorganisms can use. These microbes form the foundation of a food system that works without sunlight.
The yeti crab has therefore developed an extraordinary way to take advantage of this hidden energy source. Its arms are not simply strange-looking body parts. They are specialized surfaces that interact with the microbial world surrounding the vents.
There is still much to learn about exactly how these relationships work in every yeti crab species. Researchers continue to study the bacteria living on their bodies and how the crabs obtain nutrition from them.
