Somewhere in life, you may have heard about many such punishments in history, in which a person was hanged upside down and cut in the middle, and in some cases, they were killed by rats, known as Rat torture. Similarly, punishment by electric shock rule was also adopted by many people, and hence people were punished for their mistakes by adopting many such cruel tortures. But there is also a punishment in history that can make anyone's heart tremble due to its creepiest way of torture, the name of such punishment is Brazen bull, also known as "bronze bull", or "Sicilian bull". In fact, under this punishment, cruel rulers used to put humans inside a bull made of bronze and then roast them until they died screaming under severe pain. This bull was designed in such a way that no matter how much the person shouts and screams inside it, but there is always a sound like the roar of a bull was heard outside. Although we will know more about this bull further, but before that, let us know how people came to know about this punishment and when actually such punishment was introduced in history in means of executing criminals.
The Brazen bull punishment has been mentioned in many historical books, and a similar book has also been written by the Greek historian "Diodorus Siculus" where he told the whole story of the Brazen bull. However, apart from this punishment, he has also written in his book about many other punishments that cruel rulers had given to people in earlier times. Actually, the idea of this bull was given by Perillos of Athens between 570 and 554 BC, who was an inventor and sculptor of his time. And the ruthless ruler for whom this Brazen bull was designed was named "Phalaris", who was renowned for his excessive cruelty and wanted to punish the wrongdoers inside his kingdom in such a way that everyone would suffer and feel that pain, and hence, he designed the Brazen bull. Actually, this bull was designed in such a way that any human could be put inside its stomach, and then a fire was set under it, heating the metal until the person inside was roasted to death. But the process of this torturing death machine did not end here because when people started screaming inside, the sound of the roar of a bull could be heard from the bull's mouth. This was made possible by an acoustic device installed inside the bull which distorted the sound of the victim's screams and made it sound like the bellowing of an infuriated bull.
Along with this, there was a slight smoke coming out of this bull's nose, which was filled with incense to fight the stench of burned meat. Because a perfume was set near the nose inside the bull and as such, this cruel ruler enjoyed the punishment given to a victim. According to legend, when the burning process ended, the victim's scorched bones started to shone like jewels, which were collected to make bracelets, that Phalaris used to wear. But do you know who was the first to be burnt in this bull? In fact, Perillos, the inventor of the Brazen bull, had to be the first target of his brutal ruler Phalaris. Because after making this cruel death machine, he told Phalaris about its specialty, Phalaris also wanted to test this machine, meanwhile, he pushed Perillos into his own creation and lit the fire, so that he could hear the sound of his screams. But he released Perillos before he died and thrown him down from the top of a steep hill and killed him. Upon succeeding in this experiment, Phalaris became very happy and therefore greatly appreciated the Brazen bull, and then many people were later punished through it as well. However, an even more surprising thing was that when Phalaris was removed from his reign, he was also roasted within this bull, which in itself is a very historical thing.
It is also believed that the Romans used this torture device to kill some Christians. However, it is also been said that some famous Christians like St. Eustace and Saint Antipas were killed by the Bronze Bull. Now we know that it is a little difficult to fully believe such things happened in history, but sometimes these historical books and sculptures make us believe that these things are completely true.
