At the western end of India, there is a huge marsh of salt in the Thar Desert in the Kutch District of Gujarat, known as the Rann of Kutch, which is reputed to be one of the largest salt deserts in the world. At one time it was also a part of the sea, but during thousands of years, such geographical changes took place that it became one of the largest salt pools in the world. Spread nearly about 20000 square kilometers, it was once inhabited by one of the greatest cities of India's unknown history, Dholavira, a beautiful Harappan City. It was first discovered in 1956 but the remains of Dholavira remained buried in the ground for 35 years. Dholavira's excavation started in 1990, the work was of great value and after many years of hard work, very valuable things started being found.

But one day a very surprising thing happened when a white stone was seen coming out of the ground, and consequently, more similar stones started appearing and representing some symbols, which were probably of an ancient language or code, or they might be of another world. Never had such a thing been found here before, could it reveal the hidden secrets of the Indus Valley Civilization, whose keys are hidden in a language that no one has yet understood. A total of ten symbols were found one after the other, and all were made of white gypsum.
The Ten Symbols of the Dholavira Signboard |
The most surprising and best thing about the discovery at Dholavira was that these symbols had found to archaeologists near the base of the gate of the city that may have been considered a signboard at that time. But we do not know what was written on it and the biggest reason for this is that we could not read it. So the biggest problem with Harappan writings is that till date we have not found anyone to read them. As of now, they have not been understood, so these symbols of Dholavira still remain a mystery to all.
Dholavira, an archaeological site, located in the Kutch District of present-day Gujarat, was once part of the Indus Valley Civilization and one of its finest cities. Archaeologists believe that the city spread over 120 acres was built around 5000 years ago, which was even older than the great pyramids of Egypt. Dholavira was inhabited for nearly 1,500 years. The people of Dholavira were very civilized, they had very advanced technology at that time. In 3500 BCE they had built drains under the ground, they had access to large bricks, and the city they built was also well planned and settled. The city was settled on a platform, which means that they knew a lot about city planning. They had a very good understanding of trigonometry, and had the knowledge of ratios, and knew the calculations necessary to establish a large city.
But who were the people who settled this ancient city? They used trigonometry at that time when the world did not even know about it. Would our ancestors have made clay models to settle their city? we will never know about it. But there is no doubt that they were aware of civil engineering, geology, and hydrology. Dholavira was a city in that era where the water system was very well maintained. The city was situated between two seasonal streams, the Mansar in the north and Manhar in the south. The two streams were connected by interconnecting tanks built across the city. Today, in the 21st century, there is a shortage of drinking water all over the world, due to which wars can also occur. But they had controlled the water in Dholavira, by using channels, dikes, and dams, and we can use those things today by taking guidance from Dholavira.
5000 years ago, Dholavira was a very busy port of the Arabian Sea, the trade was at its peak, and people here used to manufacture beads for export. Beads made here have been even found in Mesopotamia, such as in today's Iraq. Dholavira was one of the grandest cities of that time, however, it did not seem to know how this beautiful city suddenly disappeared. That advanced civilization had acquired the powers of nature, where people traded all over the world and had a population of several thousand and then suddenly disappeared. But what was the reason behind this, most researchers believe that the biggest reason was climate change. The researchers are still trying to get information about Dholavira, but perhaps most of its secrets will remain mysterious like those codes and symbols.
