There is no doubt that in today's time dogs are more loyal than humans and everyone is fully aware that dogs are not afraid to sacrifice their lives when needed. Today we are going to tell you the sad story of the only dog in the world who was sentenced to life in prison and after getting this punishment, that dog became the most extraordinary prisoner of this world. This dog's name is "The Pep", also known as "The Prison Dog". In 1920 Governor Gifford Pinchot of Pennsylvania received a strange gift, his relatives who already had plenty of Labrador dogs, picked up a recently born black Labrador puppy, and gifted it to the Governor. Later this puppy was named Pep and the amazing thing was that in a few days this puppy became a very loving member of that family. But after getting a little bigger, a bad habit inside Pep made its home, he started tearing the cushions on the sofa with his teeth, thus spoiling all the sofa sets of the house.
Meanwhile, Governor Gifford Pinchot had to travel to Maine, he went to different prisons in Maine where he saw that dogs admitted to police are kept with the prisoners and are being used as a therapy to help inmates rehabilitation. And that's what brought an idea to Governor Gifford's mind, he believed that the prisoners in prison and their mindset could be cured with love. But he was also afraid that if his Pep got away from him, he would be lonely forever. But still, he thought of putting his best friend "Pep" in a prison in Pennsylvania, and then on 12 august 1924 Pep was arrested by the officials of the Eastern State Penitentiary. This former American prison, built-in 1829, was considered the most modern and most expensive public structure at that time. This black Labrador was also assigned an inmate number (no. C2559), and like every other prisoner, they took a mugshot of Pep.
Now a question must be arising in your mind that why an innocent dog was picked up and put in prison without any fault. So let us tell you a story that has been made behind it too, Governor Gifford Pinchot said that this dog has murdered his wife's cherished cat. This story was made only to punish Pep, but in reality, nothing like this had happened. Therefore, Pep is also sometimes referred to as Pep "The Cat-Murdering Dog". But the local media took the matter very seriously at that time, they started disrespecting the Governor for this incident. In order to save her husband, the governor's wife Mrs. Pinchot gave an interview and put the whole truth in front of the world. She declared that Pep never killed a cat or anything else. It is all a slanderous and unjustified attack on his husband's reputation. Another story also suggests that Pinchot decided to send his dog to prison for spoiling his cushions on the sofa and found it to be the perfect solution. But the actual truth was that the governor donated his own dog to the prison to boost prisoners' morale.
Actually, Pep was a prisoner, but at the same time he came to the prison as a healer for the prisoners, now the prisoners preferred to live with him and they started to call him "Pep The Black". Pep was allowed that he could roam freely throughout the prison, he became a good friend not only of the prisoners but also of the guards there. Then in 1929, after the construction of the new Graterford prison, Pep was brought to this prison, and like this, he was kept in four different prisons during his life journey. Knowingly or unknowingly, Pep changed the lives of many prisoners while doing so, and then one day he died in the prison area due to natural causes and was buried on the prison grounds.
