It is often seen that whenever we keep working continuously for a long time, then after taking a short pause, we start cracking our fingers, so that we can get some relief and start feeling refreshed. Frequently, people are seen doing this in homes, colleges, or offices. Many people love the sound produced by the cracking of their fingers, that's why they usually engaged in doing so several times a day.
But now the question is, do you also crack your fingers five to six times a day? Some people crack their knuckles again and again to hear the noise of cracking or popping, but do you know why this sound comes from the fingers? So the simple answer is, our joints have a kind of fluid, a thick liquid located between our joints, known as synovial fluid which acts as a lubricant for our joints like motor oil in a car's engine, which helps in reducing friction and preserving our cartilage. This fluid usually contains gases like nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide. On popping or cracking a joint, you stretch the joint capsule, allowing these gases to rapidly release, forming bubbles.
This is why when we crack our fingers, it is actually a burst of nitrogen bubbles or other gases that we usually hear as cracking or popping. It takes about 20 minutes for these bubbles to re-form in your joints before they can crack again. In other words, to crack the same knuckle again, you must wait for the time until the gases re-form in the synovial fluid. Also, you must have experienced that you get some kind of relief from cracking your fingers, but this only happens psychologically, as the satisfaction is mostly in your head, in fact, there is no such relief physically.
