Human civilization has developed a lot, due to which we spend all our time using modern places and tools. But even today there are some such places in the world which are just as pure and natural as before, like forests in different parts of the world. Along with being full of different types of trees and plants, these forests have also hidden many secrets and ghostly history inside. In one of our previous articles, we had discussed the Black Forest of Germany, and today we are going to talk about another haunted forest, known as Alas Purwo Forest.

Located at the southeastern tip of the East Java province of Indonesia, spreading over an area of 43,000 hectares, this forest is more mysterious than you can imagine. The Alas Purwo is a Javanese word that literally means the "First Forest" or the "Ancient Forest". In accordance with a Javanese legend, this area is referred to as the place where the earth first-ever emerged from the ocean and hence, this forest has existed since ancient times. If we talk about ancient times, then from the very beginning this forest is known as the forest of the spirits. During that time, when shamans started living around this forest, they used to summon divine spirits through their secret supernatural rituals. 

Gradually this forest was inhabited by good spirits who helped the people living in the surrounding areas. These spirits brought rain during the drought, showed the way to the lost people, and also guarded the crops. But over time the number of shamans started doing dark rituals in this area and their number also increased a lot, as they used witchcraft and black magic to perform various dark rituals. They started summoning evil spirits by sacrificing women, following which stories of ghost attacks and possessions began to emerge, resulting in people starting frightened from going inside these forests. It is said that from then till now these spirits roam in this forest and they become very powerful as soon as night falls.

Some remnants of the Majapahit empire were also found in this forest, which includes a Hindu temple too. It is said that many times in the caves near these relics, sages of ancient times have been seen doing penance. Another belief is also prevalent which involves there being a door to hell in this mysterious forest, which leads the person going inside it directly to hell, from where he can never return. Ajisaka, who was the king of java, had sent his troops inside this forest three times, but no one knew where they all disappeared each time. But for the fourth time, Ajisaka himself entered the forest with his soldiers, it is believed that he kept roaming in the forest, but he could not find a way out. Then all his troops were killed while his spirit is still wandering in the forest. 

There is also a mystery in this forest of going to a parallel universe or other dimensions, where people have entered many times by mistake. There are many common accounts of people getting lost inside this forest, they told that they had entered in some other dimension, where some strange ghostly villages existed. They wandered there for several days, but they could not find a way out, then they found some mysterious characters or spirits, who told them the way out of that world. 

In addition, several claims are also made to see the spirit of a beautiful princess in this forest. According to legend, there was a princess in the Majapahit kingdom whose name was Gayatri Rajapatni who preferred to become a Buddhist monk rather than being a queen. The story says that even after her death, she has been inhabiting near the Trianggulasi beach in the conservation area inside the Alas Purwo forest for a long time. The visitors who spent the night here, Gayatri often appeared to them. It is believed that Gayatri comes in front of people, tells them about her past in a polite way. She spread peace through her speech and behavior. The King of Snakes

Planetnik

Another spirit that existed in this area since ancient times is Pranetnik. This spirit was considered evil as well as friendly, a daemon that could control rain, hail, and weather. In earlier times, the people of the nearby villages knew this spirit very well. When it became angry with someone, it would destroy their fields with storms and rain, but those who behaved well with it, it also alerted them of impending calamities. Płanetnik often descended from the sky and spend time among people. The Fairy-Tale World of the Tatra mountains presents the story of a mill worker named Sobanek who regularly provides food to Planetnik. In return, whenever a storm or heavy rain was about to hit Sobanek's village, Planetnik would already warn him about the impending weather-related disasters.

On 6 August 1848, the Royal Navy's warship HMS Daedalus was heading towards St Helena in the South Atlantic Ocean. The captain of the ship, McQuhae, described the encounter in the official report. It was five o'clock in the evening, and because of the dark clouds, the sunlight was a little less. At that time, the ship was about 300 miles away from the coast of Namibia when suddenly they spotted a creature in the water. It was a tall creature whose height was estimated by the captain and the crew to be at least 60 feet. It looked like an enormous serpent with its head about four feet above the water. 

This serpent was so close to the ship that according to the captain, even if it were someone I knew, I should have easily recognized his features with the naked eye. According to him the skin of that creature was dark brown, and yellowish-white near the neck. It swam parallel to their ship for about 20 minutes and had a very high swimming speed. The crew members had also not seen any such creature in their lifetime before, due to which they started making different assumptions when they saw it. But everyone agreed on one thing for sure, It was a serpent.

Mr. Drummond, who was present in the crew, also wrote his experience about this creature in his personal diary which was published in the year 1997. There were similarities in Drummond's diary and captain's report, with both of them believing that it was a serpent. According to both, the head of that creature was about 4 feet above the water and it remained in view for around twenty minutes. Drummond himself had made a drawing of this creature in his diary, seeing which all the crew members agreed that this was the creature. After this encounter, people gave different theories to describe this sighting logically and it remained a mystery as the captain did not have any evidence.

But in the same year, a story was published in the London Times newspaper, the story being a sighted description by the captain of another ship. He revealed that recently their ship was attacked by a sea serpent, but in return, they fired at the serpent, injuring the snake as well, causing it to disappear underwater away from the ship. According to him, the serpent was about a hundred feet long and he described the head of this creature in the same words as Captain McQuhae and his crew did.
