If we talk about northern India, the name of Kashmir comes first in everyone's mind, as this beautiful place is called heaven on earth. But this beautiful heaven is also known for a mythical entity called "Rantas". The tales of Rantas are quite famous in this region, whose existence derives from Kashmiri folklore and is believed to be a mythological creature. The term "Rantas" generally refers to the Dayan or a female humanoid creature whose natural abode is believed to be in the deep forests existing amid the mountains and hills around Kashmir. Their appearance is described as quite frightening, with pointed teeth, long nails, and inverted feet. They have magical powers and are believed to be large in size, such as one-and-a-half times that of normal humans, and have long hair covering their bodies.

On heavily snowy or cold nights Rantas come out of the woods and headed towards the city to catch its victim. According to folklore, this female figure is well-known for killing women and abducting men for keeping them prisoner, and later marrying them. They want children from men and this is how their population increases. When a Rantas enters adulthood, her mother gives her a comb to which she becomes emotionally attached and wears it in her hair for the rest of her life. There is a belief that once this comb is offered to her, she begins to feel an intense longing for a partner and if she finds a worthy mate, she will offer him her comb, thus gifting him the power to control her magical powers.
It is said that rantas wanders in search of men and when she likes someone, she calls out his name in front of his house at night. And if that person comes out of the house, she lifts him up and flies away to the caves in the dense forests. The fear of rantas has been there since ancient times in Kashmir and the surrounding areas and newspapers often report of such men who escaped from a rantas's captivity after years. Back in the recent past, one audio went viral on social media in which strange voices of a female screaming are heard, and this audio was said to be the voice of rantas. But later people called it fake, but even today the people of Kashmir believe in the existence of rantas.
